Today is National Poetry Day...

I can be an old cynic at times...
well to be brutally frank...
most of the time...
however...
today is National Poetry Day.

And yes, every day is some
National day
i.e.
National Cones Hotline Day
National nose picking Day
National Bunion Day
National Tofu Day
National You Day
National Me Day
National ? Day

I love words, trite I know:
 I don't care!

Today my poem...

The Mower

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

Philip Larkin

  1. In honour of National Poetry Day I have adjusted my cravat, and shall strike dramatic poses about the house all day.

    No change there then.

    1. My dear boy, how dramatic a pose can you strike in a bathchair with ankle swathed in DVT prevention stocking? Topped off with Tory blue velvet smoking jacket with black braid toggles; briar pipe puffing and paisley cravat notwithstanding.

    1. I got short shrift from the local hedgehog rescue centre when I offered to adopt a hog. Weeks later I read David Attenborough got a similar flea in the ear, then I didn't feel so bad.

  4. I missed it completely
    This National Day
    Composing quite fleetly
    I'd just like to say
    (I'll try it discreetly)
    I'm filled with dismay...

PLEASE MIND THE HEDGEHOGS NEXT TIME YOU MOW!
